  • 24/01/2026Seminar with Andreas Andreou

    Andreas Andreou
The concept of improvisation varies depending on the musical tradition in question. Highlighting elements of essential relevance both to the musical tradition it serves and to the means that shape it (musicians, musical instruments, etc.), the interpretation of improvisation is often placed between the consideration of freedom of expression and the informal "rules" that govern each musical tradition, as appropriate. Focusing on the musical traditions of the wider Eastern Mediterranean, the seminar focuses on improvisation based on the taksim (taxi) form and examines basic characteristics such as makam, the folk street, phrasing, the development process, and the internal structure of improvisation. The main objective of the seminar is to construct improvisation in both its theoretical and practical dimensions. The seminar is open to all interested parties, regardless of level, age, or instrument, with the basic requirement that each participant bring their own musical instrument.

The aim of the seminar is to introduce the basic elements needed to play and sing a piece with knowledge, feeling, and expression. Through an experiential, participatory process, we will learn about and work on: - Scales - Harmony - Rhythmic training - Means of expression All this will be put into practice through creative practical games, where theory and practice will be combined naturally, with the main focus on "learning by playing." In the second part of the seminar, we will attempt to enter the magical world of improvisation (taximi) — either freely or accompanied by specific rhythmic and harmonic patterns.
