Great Female Voices of Rebetiko
A series of workshops dedicated to the women who left their mark on rebetiko and folk music with their voices and passion.
From Sotiria Bellou and Marika Ninou to Rosa Eskenazi, Rita Abatzis, Stella Haskil, and Ioanna Georgakopoulou, each meeting is a musical journey through the lives, styles, and interpretive power of these great singers.
Through listening, analysis, and vocal exercises, we approach five characteristic songs by each artist, learn to sing them, and explore how words and emotions are transformed into voice.
The workshops are open to everyone—beginners and advanced singers who wish to delve deeper into the art of interpretation and gain a more meaningful understanding of the world of rebetiko.
14/12/2025Marika Ninou
We continue the series "Great Female Voices of Rebetiko" with one of the most distinctive and talked-about figures in folk music, Marika Ninou.
Ninou, a woman of rare expressive power, left her own unique mark on the discography and stages of her era. Her clear and direct voice will forever be associated with her long collaboration with Vasilis Tsitsanis, writing one of the most important chapters in Greek folk music.
The workshop is open to beginners and advanced students alike. Together we will learn about her life and career, analyze five of her most characteristic songs, and systematically work on her interpretation, style, and phrasing.
23/11/2025Sotiria Bellou
We begin the series "Great Female Voices of Rebetiko" by honoring a symbol of folk song, Sotiria Bellou.
It is a beautiful symbolic beginning, in a place familiar to her memory and origins, as Bellou comes from Drosia, Chalkida, a village near Avlis.
We will learn about her life and work, analyze five of her characteristic songs, and sing them together, working on interpretation, style, and vocal expression.
